What Size Compact Oil Cooler Do You Need?

TriggaSpec compact coolers come in 19, 25, 34, and 44-row. Too small and you're still running hot. Too big and your oil never reaches operating temp. Here's how to pick based on where you live and how hard you drive.

Between 25 and 34? Go by location. Cooler climate, 25-row. Hotter climate or harder driving, 34-row.

Before you pick the biggest one
Bigger Isn't Always Better

A bigger core pulls more heat out of your oil, faster. That's the problem when it's more cooler than your car needs: the oil never reaches operating temp, the engine works harder, and fuel economy drops.

44-row is not for daily drivers. It's built for heavily abused cars that live near the rev limiter: dedicated track, drag, and drift cars. On a daily or a car that sees the track on and off, it will overcool your oil. If you live somewhere very cold, don't run it at all.

Critical

Oil burns off and exits through exhaust

How fast you climb from green to red comes down to how you drive. A daily with the right size cooler rarely gets near the danger zone. Hard pulls and canyon runs get you there faster, and track time gets you there fastest. The right core size buys you margin. It doesn't change how hard you drive.

19-Row

Very Cold Winters

For areas where winter gets seriously cold. A bigger core in those conditions keeps your oil from ever reaching operating temp.

25-Row

Semi-Cold Climates · Daily to Racing

Covers daily driving, spirited driving, and racing. The thermostatic sandwich plate keeps it from overcooling, so it doesn't hurt to run one in a cooler area.

34-Row

Hotter Climates · Harder Driving

Same use cases as the 25-row with more cooling capacity. The pick if you live somewhere hot or drive your car hard. For most owners, the right answer is the 25 or the 34.

44-Row

Dedicated Track, Drag & Drift Only

For heavily abused cars that spend their time near the rev limiter. Not for daily drivers or on/off track cars, and never in very cold areas. It will overcool your oil if it isn't matched to how the car is used.

Why we built a compact version
The VR30 Bay Is Already Stacked

The VR30 already runs several cooling cores up front, each one handling a different system. Bolt a thick traditional oil cooler in front of them and air has to push through four layers before it reaches the radiator. By then that air is already hot, and your whole cooling system takes the hit.

Air-to-water intercooler system
Radiator · coolant
Less space taken

A thinner core means a thinner layer in front of everything else, so more of that airflow is left for the radiator.

Built for modded cars

Swap to an air-to-air intercooler and a big front-mount takes the space a cooler would've used. The compact core is easy to mock up in different spots depending on your mods.

Trigga's Take

"We've been mounting standard coolers on VR30s for years. It works, but it's bulky. Compact Series came out of R&D on this platform to make it OEM+: better fitment, less space, and it works the way a factory part should."

What doesn't change
Same Thermostatic Plate, Same Kit

Compact kits ship with the same thermostatic sandwich plate, mounting hardware, and lines as the standard kits. The plate decides when oil actually flows to the cooler, and that's what makes any core size work.

❌ Non-Thermostatic

Oil runs through the cooler nonstop. Temps can sit at 120–130°F while driving and take 20–30 minutes to reach operating temp, with the engine working harder the whole time.

✅ Thermostatic (Every Kit We Sell)

Starts opening at 160°F, fully open at 180°F. Oil only goes to the cooler once it needs to, so cold starts are unaffected and the engine warms up the way it's supposed to.

Fitment
Built for VR30. Fits More Than That.
Q50 Q60 400Z AWD + RWD

Designed for VR30DDTT-powered cars. It's also a strong fit for Q-chassis cars with the VQ37VHR, which use the same tight front radiator support.
