VQ37VHR / VQ35HR — Bolt-On Build Guide
VQ Bolt-On Upgrades — What You Can Do Before a Tune

Some mods move the needle without touching the ECU. Some don't. Here's the honest breakdown of what actually works, what requires a tune, and what order to do everything in — so you don't waste money or hurt your engine.

The honest answer upfront

What Needs a Tune — and What Doesn't

Not every mod requires a tune. But anything that changes how much air or fuel reaches the engine does. Know the difference before you start spending.

✓ No Tune Required
Thermostatic engine oil cooler
Transmission cooler (ICE BOX)
Power steering cooler (DRIFT BOX)
Baffled catch can
Ported intake manifold — driveable, tune highly recommended
⚠️ Tune Required
76mm throttle body kit
3-inch long tube cold air intakes
E85 fuel upgrade kit (injectors + pump)
Test pipe / high-flow cats (source externally)
Any combination of the above

The Mods That Don't Require a Tune

1
Start here — every build
Thermostatic Engine Oil Cooler Kit

High oil temps are the silent killer on VQ engines. The cooler keeps oil in the safe operating range whether you're in traffic or on track. No ECU changes, no tune, no modifications to the car.

✓ No tune required

Automatic cars — upgrade here
ICE BOX — Engine Oil + Transmission Cooler

If you're running an automatic, do the ICE BOX instead. Transmission fluid overheats just like engine oil — and the damage is just as expensive. One kit covers both.

Don't skip this one
Baffled Catch Can

The stock PCV system recirculates crankcase vapors back into the intake. Over time that builds up as carbon on your throttle body, manifold, and valves. The catch can stops it at the source.

✓ No tune required

First performance mod — you'll feel this
Ported Intake Manifold Set

The manifold is where you start making real gains. Improved airflow and throttle response — noticeable immediately after install. You can drive it without a tune, but a tune is highly recommended to get the full benefit and protect the engine under load.

Trigga's Take

"With these mods you see great results and keep the engine healthy while still feeling a real power increase — and no tune required. Not much more is needed. Don't fall for anything else. You don't need anything else and you will waste money and not see results."

If You're Getting a Tune Anyway — Do It All at Once

The Right Order

Complete the no-tune mods first: oil cooler, catch can, manifold. When you're ready to tune: add the throttle body, intakes, and E85 kit at the same time. One install session. One tune. Done.

Power Pack Plus

Manifold + throttle body + E85 kit. Best value if you're going all in without intakes.

Power Pack Pro

Manifold + throttle body + E85 + 3-inch intakes. The full bolt-on package. One tune covers all of it.
