Built by a builder — for builders

Trigga's Build Recipes

Not sure where to start? These are the exact mod sequences Trigga recommends based on years of building VQ engines. In order. No fluff, no money traps.

🔧
Daily Driver Recipe
Reliable, no tune required. Keep your engine healthy while feeling real gains.
🏁
Serious Driver Recipe
Full bolt-on build for drivers willing to get a tune and go all in.

This recipe is for daily drivers who want to modify for reliability — not just power. These mods protect your engine for long-term abuse, extend engine life, and still give you noticeable performance gains. No tune required for any of these.

1
Start here — always
Thermostatic Engine Oil Cooler Kit

High oil temps are the silent engine killer on VQ platforms. This is the first mod Trigga recommends to everyone — period. Keeps oil temps in the safe zone whether you're doing pulls, sitting in traffic, or running track days.

✓ No tune required

2
If budget allows
ICE BOX Combo — Engine Oil + Transmission Cooler

If you have the budget, upgrade to the ICE BOX which includes both the engine oil cooler and an automatic transmission cooler in one complete kit. More protection, better value than buying them separately.

⚠️ Automatic cars only for the transmission cooler

Manual transmission? Skip the ICE BOX and stick with the standalone oil cooler kit from Step 1.

Don't skip this one
Baffled Catch Can & Coolant Reservoir

The stock PCV system on VQ engines recirculates crankcase vapors back into your intake — causing carbon buildup on your throttle body, manifold, and valves. The catch can eliminates this problem. Your engine runs cleaner and more efficiently from day one.

✓ No tune required

First performance upgrade
Ported Intake Manifold Set

This is where you start feeling real gains. The ported manifold improves airflow and throttle response — you'll notice it immediately. You can drive without a tune and still feel the difference. Just don't drive the car aggressively back to back right away.

✓ Can be driven without a tune ⚠️ Tune highly recommended

Test Pipe, High Flow Cats & Exhaust System

Trigga recommends pairing your build with a proper test pipe, high flow catalytic converters, and a quality exhaust system from a reputable brand. These aren't sold by TriggaSpec but they complete the build and work well alongside these mods.

"With these mods you see great results and keep the engine healthy while still feeling a real power increase — and no tune required. Not much more is needed. Don't fall for anything else. You don't need anything else and you will waste money and not see results."

Daily Driver Recipe — Summary
Engine Oil Cooler Kit (or ICE BOX for automatic cars)
Baffled Catch Can & Coolant Reservoir
Ported Intake Manifold Set
Test pipe, high flow cats & exhaust (source separately)

This recipe is for serious drivers who are ready to get a tune and go all in on a full bolt-on build. More in-depth installation, bigger gains, and a properly tuned car that performs at its peak. Start with the Daily Driver Recipe as your foundation, then build up from there.

1
Start here — same as daily driver
Complete the Daily Driver Recipe First

The Daily Driver Recipe is your foundation — oil cooler, catch can, and ported manifold. These longevity mods protect your engine and give you a solid base to build on. Don't skip them just because you're going for more power.

✓ Follow Daily Driver Recipe steps 1–4 first
2
Upgrade your manifold purchase
Consider a Signature Kit to Save Money

When it's time to buy your manifolds, Trigga recommends looking at the Power Pack or Power Pack Plus instead of buying the manifold alone. You get the manifold, throttle body kit, and E85 system bundled together at a better price than buying each separately.

Case by case
76mm Throttle Body Kit

The throttle body kit is a case-by-case decision depending on your build goals and budget. If you're buying a Signature Kit it's already included. If you're building piecemeal, discuss with your tuner before adding it — a tune is required after TB installation.

Don't get scammed — read this carefully
3-Inch Long Tube Cold Air Intakes

These are TRUE 3-inch intakes — not the 2.5–2.75 inch "cold air intakes" most aftermarket brands sell. This distinction matters more than you think.

Most aftermarket intakes on the market don't require a tune because they don't actually do anything — they pull in hot air from the engine bay and lose power. You're not only wasting money, you're losing horsepower. Trigga calls these "hot air intakes" and has been burned by them personally.

True 3-inch long tube intakes pull in cool air from outside the engine bay and make a real difference — but they require a tune because of how significantly they change airflow dynamics.

⚠️ Tune required — non-negotiable

Do this at the same time as the intakes
E85 Fuel Upgrade Kit

Once you're getting a tune anyway, add the E85 kit at the same time. E85 makes more power than pump gas, costs less per gallon, and runs cooler — it's a no-brainer at this stage of the build. Since you're already paying for a tune, adding E85 calibration is minimal extra cost.

⚠️ Tune required — absolute must

Test Pipe, High Flow Cats & Exhaust System

Same recommendation as the Daily Driver build — a proper exhaust system completes the build and pairs well with everything above. Source from a reputable brand. Not sold by TriggaSpec.

ℹ️ Source separately — not sold by TriggaSpec
Straight from Trigga — on cheap intakes

"Most aftermarket intakes are money traps. They don't need a tune because they don't do anything — they suck in hot air. You're not only losing money, you're losing power. You're better off cutting holes in your intake box. I fell for it myself — that's why I'm so passionate about it. If you bought one: congratulations, you got scammed. Sell it."
